A Reflection for Independence Day
Are You Truly Free in the Land of the Free?
Welcome to Career Advise, the newsletter providing career advice, how-tos, and life musings through an optimistic and intriguing lens.
“FREEDOM!”
If this line immediately conjured up the iconic scene from Braveheart, then my mission is accomplished.
If it didn’t, you have some movie-watching to do. Extra credit if you embrace the spirit with some blue face paint.
As Jake mentioned last week, you’ll notice fewer posts from us in the future. Our content might also diverge from the familiar themes of our four pillars. We’re thrilled to share our new direction with you soon. Until then, enjoy these spontaneous reflections.
This week, we celebrate Independence Day—a holiday that has always held a special place in my heart. Maybe it was the fireworks, the barbecues, or the lively pool gatherings. But as time moves forward, I find myself contemplating the deeper meaning of this day.
We are free. This freedom is a remarkable gift. Yet, as I sit here, I can’t help but wonder how many of us truly experience genuine freedom.
In the land of the free, we are bombarded with endless choices, each vying for our attention. Often, these choices present a struggle between what is beneficial and what is detrimental, between moving forward and staying stagnant. We see children glued to screens instead of discovering the world through a book or a bike ride. Online critics, shielded by anonymity, engage in senseless criticism. Parents, trapped in the endless scroll of social media, miss out on priceless moments with their kids.
This year, as you celebrate your freedom, take a moment to reflect: “Am I genuinely free?” If your answer is no, I urge you to break free from the subtle elements that hold you back from the life you truly desire. That life is waiting for you. And the best part? You have the freedom to make the changes necessary to reclaim it.
From me and Jake, have a happy and safe 4th of July!
