Today’s Pillar: Tend the Orchard

With our battery-operated four-wheelers and color-changing flashlights, growing up, my neighborhood friends and I would explore the outdoors without any worries. Our imaginations fueled significant discoveries, ultimately resulting in the accumulation of true knowledge. Somewhere between now and then, I, like so many others, have forgotten the liberating feeling that accompanies creative expression. We've traded novelty for familiarity, often through the lens of constant social media use.

Let's run an experiment. Do me a favor and check your screen time. Are you surprised or perhaps even a little concerned?

In our modern digital age, it's easy to fall into the trap of endless scrolling and passive consumption. Social media platforms are designed to capture our attention and keep us engaged, often at the cost of our creativity. While these platforms can offer inspiration and connection, they frequently overwhelm us with a stream of content that stifles our creative impulses.

Creativity is not just for artists, writers, or musicians. It's a vital part of problem-solving, innovation, and personal fulfillment across any field. Engaging in creative activities—whether it's painting, writing, gardening, or something else—helps us think differently and see new possibilities where others see roadblocks. Creativity fosters mental growth by challenging us to think outside the box and approach situations with a fresh perspective.

Contrast this with passive consumption, which can leave us drained and unfulfilled. It's easy to default to watching videos or scrolling through feeds, but these activities often provide temporary distraction rather than lasting satisfaction. When we create, we produce something tangible, resulting in a sense of accomplishment and joy.

How do we reclaim our creativity in a world dominated by consumption? Start small. Dedicate just a few minutes each day to a creative pursuit. Disconnect from social media and use that time to engage in something hands-on. You'll be surprised at how refreshing it can be to unplug and immerse yourself in a creative activity.

By prioritizing creation over consumption, we can rediscover the joy and fulfillment of making something new. Let's challenge ourselves to be more mindful of our digital habits and carve out time for creativity. In doing so, we can find a deeper sense of purpose and reconnect with the imaginative spirit that we may have lost along the way. Because that same spirit of adventure and creativity still resides within us—it's just waiting to be awakened.
