Today’s Pillar: Temper the Mind
Have you ever failed?
No, I’m not talking about that Beowulf exam from high school literature. I’m referring to those moments when you take a leap of faith, placing everything on the line, only to fall short of your desired outcome. It’s an experience all too familiar to many, especially in the workplace. Often, failure is viewed through the lens of negativity. However, what if I told you the road to extraordinary success is paved by failure?
President John F. Kennedy once said, “Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly.” This sentiment encompasses a fundamental truth about greatness—it often requires a willingness to accept failure.
In our careers, the fear of failure often cripples us. We meticulously plan our steps, aiming for perfect execution at every turn; however, I’m convinced this fear of failure is hindering our progress. What if, instead of viewing failure as an obstacle, we saw it as a prerequisite for new opportunities?
Take, for example, the story of Airbnb. In the early days, the founders encountered numerous rejections and setbacks as they sought to disrupt the hospitality industry. Facing financial difficulties, they famously created and sold cereal boxes to keep the business afloat. Their willingness to learn from failure, adapt, and think outside the box (no pun intended) ultimately led to their success. Today, Airbnb is a household name, reshaping how we travel and experience new places.
Or consider the culture at Google, where failure is often celebrated. The company encourages employees to take risks and experiment with their own ideas, knowing that failure is an inevitable part of the process. This mindset has fueled Google’s groundbreaking innovations over the years.
Despite these examples, many of us still approach our careers with trepidation, fearing failure as if it were the ultimate defeat. We must shift our perspective. By daring to fail greatly, we open ourselves up to bountiful experiences.
The next time you find yourself dancing with failure, remember the words of President Kennedy. Never shy away from failure. Instead, welcome it with open arms, as it is in experiencing failures along our journey that we ultimately discover who we are.
