Monday’s Minutes

In case you are new here or you happened to miss Monday’s issue, Hope: A Foundational Belief, let me catch you up to speed. Jake wrote about the significance of possessing true hope. When we choose true hope as a foundational belief in our lives, the world presents endless opportunities. Will you pursue them?

Gardening: A Lesson on Weeds

Growing up, many humid afternoons were spent with Mel, tending to his garden. Mel lived in a modest, perfectly kept home in the town just north of mine. Throughout his time on this earth, Mel served as an honorary grandfather to me, sharing numerous life lessons. Gardening was one of Mel’s passions, and every visit to his home turned into an opportunity for him to pass on his wisdom.

After a tiring day, hands covered in soil from pulling every weed in sight, Mel and I retired to the porch swing to enjoy ice cream sandwiches. As we ate the cool treat, Mel shared a profound message. “Austin, just as gardens develop weeds, we, too, will encounter weeds [challenges] in our lives. Tend to your own before scrutinizing those in your neighbors’.”

Those words left a lasting impact on my approach to life. We all carry the responsibility to face life’s challenges, as it is through confronting them that we grow and shape our lives. Today, in a world of constant connection, it is tempting to identify and judge the problems in the lives of others. Mel’s words echo loudly: focus on your garden first.

What, exactly, does this mean? When you notice others’ problems, resist the temptation to waste energy on gossip or mockery. Instead, concentrate on clearing the weeds in your own life. Then, generously offer guidance and optimism to aid those seeking help with their weeds. Focusing on the weeds in others’ lives before addressing our own can hinder our personal growth while also jeopardizing the chance to build a community grounded in authentic connection.

Small Victories = Significant Momentum

Years ago, I stumbled upon a commencement address entitled, Make Your Bed, delivered by Admiral William H. McRaven. In the video, McRaven advised graduates to start each day by making their beds. He explained how this seemingly trivial task could set a positive tone for the day, creating significant momentum for accomplishing other tasks. McRaven emphasized that even on challenging days, returning home to a perfectly made bed would provide a sense of accomplishment. I won’t spoil the details. Follow the linked title above to watch the approximately 20-minute video for his entire message. It is well worth your time.

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

An Invitation to Stillness

As we approach the end of 2023, I invite you all to slow down and find moments of stillness. The next few weeks will swiftly pass by as we enter the new year, bringing work deadlines, Christmas shopping, and numerous gatherings. Amidst it all, I encourage you to pause and appreciate the time spent with loved ones. Embrace the present moment, share laughter, and enjoy delicious food and drinks. Do not let the busyness of this season prevent you from enjoying life and expressing love to those dearest to you.
