Today’s Pillar: Craft the Skills

In today’s professional development landscape, I would argue that one of the most critical skills one can possess is coachability. Coachability is the cornerstone upon which successful careers are built, regardless of whether you've just crossed the stage or have climbed the ranks to an executive position. In a world where change is constant and challenges are commonplace, maintaining a coachable mindset will pay favorable dividends.

At its core, being coachable is synonymous with openness to feedback, eagerness to learn, and being humble enough to acknowledge there is always room for improvement. It's about recognizing that none of us have all the answers from the outset, and that is completely okay. Perhaps you are struggling with a new role, failing to grasp a complex concept, or facing unforeseen trials; holding a coachable attitude can serve as your guiding light through these storms.

The ability to listen actively and absorb insights from those around you is a game-changer. Whether it's a mentor, a colleague, or even a subordinate, everyone has something valuable to teach. By maintaining an open mindset and a willingness to learn, you enhance your skills and knowledge while also fostering a culture of collaboration and growth within your team or organization.

As someone who has navigated their fair share of career challenges, I understand how daunting it can be to remain coachable, especially when it feels like nothing is clicking. However, I also know firsthand the transformative power of embracing a coachable spirit and the fruits that follow. Understand that failures and struggles are not reflections of our worth but rather stepping stones in our journeys.

This week, I urge all of you to welcome the power of coachability. Let go of your pride, silence your inner critic, and see each day for exactly what it is: an opportunity to accumulate the knowledge necessary for being better every day and for leaving this world a little better than it was the day prior. And remember, in embodying the spirit of coachability, you not only elevate yourself but, more importantly, you pave the way for those who will follow in your footsteps. After all, true success does not stop at personal achievement; true success is most evident when it is seen being passed on to others.
